Am I too Old to Wear Ugg boots

I was convinced that they would be a fashion flash in the pan, but five years on from the initial craze, Uggs are still loved by celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker. British sales have increased by more than 140 per cent over the past year. But this isn’t all about practicality.

My question is: should I be one of them? Can I get away with them at the age of 37?
They are actually incredibly challenging to wear. With their naive, round toes, thick seams and structure-free shape, they look caveman-basic. They drop a plumb line from calf to heel, offering no definition and no leg-lengthening options. They also impose a gait that wanders between clod-hopping and shuffling.

And if I succumb to Ugg boots, I might get too used to all that comfort, like those oldies who newly discover the wonder of trainers and are never again seen in a decent pair of shoes.

Ugg Boots to Be A Style Icon

After making some of the Worst Dressed Lists a fair bit and randomly the best dressed in 2011, Sophie Monk has decided my New Year’s resolution was to ditch the camel toe and start kicking some style goals.

“It’s not like Sophie wake up in the morning with a tracksuit and Ugg boots surgically attached to my body (well maybe some days). Though if you’d seen even a single photo of me last year you might think that was the case.” Sophie Monk said.

Sophie Monk can bikini up with the best of them, but she can’t forget my fashion resolution. That doesn’t mean she is to start wearing Nigella Lawson’s burkini but she has already discovered at even the most flesh-packed beach, you can wear a maxi dress and still feel sexy.

What my fashion resolution really means is that she can hit the upcoming Hollywood award season ready to set the red carpet on fire.

Ugg’s founder, Australian surfer Shane Steadman, sold his company to Deckers Outdoor Corp. of California in 1995. In Australia, the boots were viewed with disdain, associated with lower-class youth known as “bogans.”

Deckers, however, pursued a worldwide marketing strategy of product placement and endorsements from celebrities like Kate Hudson and Oprah Winfrey.

By 2010, all of the Australian manufacturers combined added up to only 5.9 percent of Deckers sales for Ugg boots alone. Deckers has aggressively expanded Steadman’s trademark portfolio, registering “Uggs” or “Ugg-boots” trademarks in 145 countries. That’s up from the 10 countries that Steadman was selling in.

No industry has been more demonized for exporting jobs than the footwear industry. In 1978, about 50 percent of shoes and boots bought in the United States were manufactured here; less than one percent came from China. By 2006, 85 percent of the shoes sold in this country were made in China, with domestic production making up only 1.3 percent of all footwear purchased in the United States.
